Preserving the Light
A Campaign to Restore Our Priceless Windows
The following is a summary of our proposal for work to be completed by Emil Frei and Associates at the Laclede Groves Chapel, Webster Groves, MO. The proposed work includes all steps to preserve the existing stained glass, restore the existing wood and metal parts of the window framework, and cover the exterior face of the stained glass and framework with a new layer of protective glazing.
Window Restoration Plan:
1. The old, unsightly layers of plastic, glass, and metal screens will be removed from the exterior of the windows.
2. Damage to the current windows, such as breakage and bowing, will be repaired.
3. The exterior wooden window frames will be scraped and repainted.
4. The steel inner frames of the windows will be painted on both the interior and exterior.
5. All the sealing putty that attaches the glass to the steel mullions and wood frames on the interior of the windows will be replaced.
6. The windows will be vented to the interior to allow air flow between the stained glass and the protective glazing.
7. Loose putty and caulking between the frames on the exterior will be replaced with flexible silicone.
8. The windows will be thoroughly cleaned on both the interior and exterior.
9. The exterior will be covered with 1/4 inch thick clear tempered glass for both protection and a more appealing appearance from the outside.
10. There will be a cost to access all areas of the windows, inside with scaffolding and outside with aerial lifts.
11. A 3% contingency will be required to cover unforeseen project costs.
This project will cover twenty four Large Munich Pictorial Style Windows and eighteen smaller windows.
